One of the great things about Blue Ridge is that we get to experience all four seasons. While all four seasons are special, summer is the best time to enjoy the many outdoor activities our area has to offer.
- Toccoa River Tubing
If you can only do one outdoor activity, take a tubing trip on the Toccoa River. This is a family-friendly activity for all ages. There are several tubing companies that offer trips both above and below the dam. I prefer to tube above the lake/dam because the water flow is natural. Below the dam, the flow is controlled by water releases from Lake Blue Ridge.
Typically, the tubes have bottoms and the tubing companies provide life jackets. You will park at the company’s location, and they will pick you up downstream and bring you back to your car. Toccoa Valley Campground is the premier spot for tubing above the dam, and Toccoa River Tubing Company is the best company for trips below the dam.
- The Swan Drive-in Theater
The Swan Drive-in Theater is a summertime requirement. The drive-in, as we affectionately call it, is open all year, but there’s just something about being in the grass under the screen and chasing fireflies on a summer night.
- Whitewater Rafting on the Ocoee River
Whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River is the perfect activity for adventure seekers. The Ocoee River is the same as the Toccoa River; it just becomes the Ocoee once it flows across the state line from Georgia into Tennessee. The age requirement for whitewater rafting is 12 years. Our favorite outfitter is the oldest on the river, Ocoee Rafting, which has hosted hundreds of thousands of rafters in its almost 50 years of service.
- Blue Ridge Scenic Railway Rail Bikes
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is offering a new adventure: rail bikes! You can find these on the tracks right in downtown Blue Ridge and “ride the rails” on a guided trip. The age requirement for this activity is 4 years. Try Blue Ridge Rail Bikes for a unique activity in Blue Ridge.
My summertime memories have always included tubing and the drive-in, and those are some of the best times!
